The concept developed when three local golf clubs (Phoenix GC, Sitwell Park GC, Bondhay GC) joined forces to help budding young golfers make the transition from ‘pre-junior’ golf on academy courses to experience playing on ‘real’ golf courses. Danny Willett was contacted and was delighted to accept the offer to become patron of the event and to allow his name to be used to promote the competition – the ‘Wee Willetts’ was born.
The participating clubs encouraged young boys and girls between 5 and 12 years old to enter the event. It was decided to hold three ‘round robin’ matches using the ‘Texas Scramble’ format. The events held throughout the summer were a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by the youngsters, their parents, the organisers and by members of the golf clubs, many of whom commented on the way the youngsters conducted themselves on the golf course.
All the ‘Wee Willetts’ have eagerly followed Danny’s progress on the European and US tours over the last year and he has most definitely inspired their passion for golf. We will be having annual presentations at which the youngsters will meet Danny and his sponsors and where players will receive medals for having been involved.
